In conversation with Ahmed Zaoui

“Seize every opportunity you have to learn and experience positive things, so that you may grow in character and knowledge.”

Zaoui

The fight for freedom is a long and arduous struggle. It’s something that you and I can relate to on some level. We’ve had to work hard and overcome a lot of things to leave the countries we love for a better future. Some have sacrificed more than others. But imagine you flew here through what ever means, hoping you’ll be granted asylum.
Your family’s future rest on the possibility that you can be granted refugee status, only the Government locks you up because you’re a possible terrorist threat to the country.

Media frenzy begins to circulate around your case. For the next few years you’re in total isolation, deprived of your rights and privileges. Sounds like a plot in a Steven Spielberg movie doesn’t it? Well it’s not. Ahmed Zaoui lived through this.

Today, Ahmed Zaoui walks a free man. Enjoying all that New Zealand has to offer. A far cry from where he was not long ago. Since his exit from Algeria, life has not been easy for the Asylum seeker. Steadfast, humble and optimistic is what characterizes this modern day freedom fighter. Like the greats of this world, he has fought to clear his name and was successful.

Mr Zaoui sees real opportunities for all refugees in this country, especially for the youth. He is encouraged by the progress he has seen but hopes communities would take a more proactive role in helping the youth.

“The role of the family is important,” says Mr Zaoui because perceptions and attitudes are fostered in this environment.

“Seize every opportunity you have to learn and experience positive things, so that you may grow in character and knowledge.”

Ahmed Zoaui has teenagers of his own, and so this issue is close to his heart.

As new immigrants to this country they will have to go through the process of learning English, making new friends and taking part in social life.

“Their choices in friends are important, but it is something that you cannot control. We must try and get them involved in activities that would instill some of the disciplines we want in them,” explains Mr Zaoui.

Ahmed Zaoui regularly partakes in community events and youth activities; with football being one of is greatest passions.

“In Algeria I suffered a lot. There was racism and class differences and political and everything. This was only on the football ground. But when I come here, everyone is enjoying with everybody else. Somali and Indians and Arabs and kiwis and Asians all playing together.”

Personal responsibility is important explains Mr Zaoui. As individuals we cannot expect people will do the work for us and everything will automatically appear out of thin air.

A positive mindset is one way to overcome some of your difficulties. As immigrants we must work together and have everything transparent so there is no misunderstanding.

“The future looks good. But we must work on the present and learn from the past if we are to make the future prosperous.”

The question

Do you think that Ahmed Zaoui was correct in saying that, the community needs to take a more proactive role with the youth and can you give an example of such people in your community?

very right!

our communities do need to be more proactive in supporting the youth.

worrying about the youth, judging what they are up to and complaining about how they are is not support.

i'm all for community support, but not community support that suffocates our freedom. i wANT THEM TO ALLOW US TO GROW AND provide the means to do that not draw up plans for us to do and make sure we carry them out.

community support is crucial for refugee youths who are trying to come to grips with everything thats happening around them. However, i think it all goes wrong when that particular support network start to implant their believes onto us. I mean, when this haoppens the word 'support'is taken out of the equation, and we are made to feel like helpless individuals who cant do our own thinking. They need to play their role, without trying to feed us their views on how the world turns. They need to find a way to accept us for the little qualities we bring into this world. When they try to mould us, they're only degrading us... and making us lose oursleves in the process of douing so.i think this the biggest turn off for us youth when it comes to community support. They need to understand that this is a new age... a new country... ENDLESS OPPURTUNITY...fr god knows what...thy need to believe deep down that there is POTENTIAL in todays youths- i think thats the only time we will see eye to eye.

I feel you rahwa.

what really gets to me is the blind judgments that get passed onto the youth from the older people. and it makes me think... what can we do? If there's no strong support for the youth from our communities, may be we are responsible for being our own support... this calls for a thread in the forum

i think whats important, is that we work together to recognise potential and build the foundations for our youths. It would be great if we could see eye to eye...cus we wld surely achieve more. Its about getting everyone on the same page...if our communities see that there is potential in todays african youth...surely, they will feel the need to play a supporting role. But, i think they need to see that first. So hence the importance of Nileflow...showcasing the talent and potential that exists within todays youth.

just thinking, as we do smilies/wink.gif

the greater thing is to be positive and work in some difficult circumstances ,there is also good things within the community if we can open our eyes to see the positive. In fact I agree with you that if some one tells you what to do always or if he if try to project his idea all the time that is absolutely wrong. But you can be part of the community and change the those wrong acts, if you don’t Pont out who else can do that? do not wait for some one to do it get up do ypur part.by chengeing the human mind you can change the human action.

don’t worry about what other people judgment is , do the right thing and be positive you can show the community what the youth can do ,even without the support of the community you need to start looking the bigger picture, rise your voice to the community and be part of it.

our communities do need to be more proactive in supporting the youth.

worrying about the youth, judging what they are up to and complaining about how they are is not support.
